What is a safety logic controller?

Safety controllers are used to monitor and control different types of safety devices. They receive signals from safety input devices and control whether to start or stop machines.

Safety controllers are designed for interfacing with safety components such as light curtains in applications like robotics, press controls and material handling systems. They can be programmed to suit specific requirements. They are used in various applications across a broad variety of industries including food and beverage, pharmaceutical, packaging, energy and automotive.

OMRON’s range of safety controllers

OMRON offers a wide variety of safety controllers, safety logic control systems and safety controller accessories.

Upgrading to a safety controller can be complicated due to the additional program development, troubleshooting and PLC integration. The compact G9SP safety controller makes adding a safety controller simple. Ideal for small to midsize applications, the G9SP safety controller has a user-friendly programming environment, including embedded simulation and monitoring tools, that makes program development and troubleshooting easy and accessible.

For new system design or retrofit projects, meeting machine safety requirements is an exhausting task for machine builders and maintenance teams. The NX-SL5 safety controller reduces the time required for machine safety programming, verification, and troubleshooting with automatic programming, simple automatic test, and data logging. It supports flexible manufacturing, scalable safety solutions and CIP Safety over Ethernet/IP, FSoE, or both simultaneously. The NX-SL5 provides an interactive environment to maintain a solution without requiring advanced training, offers direct access to safety signature check and generates function verification reports for your documentation of a compliant, functional system.

Complex safety challenges are simplified with NX safety control, which can help you achieve the highest level of productivity and flexibility without compromising safety. The safety controller meets Category 4, PLe according to the EN ISO 13849-1 and SIL3 according to the IEC 61508, plus:

- Safety function blocks conforming with IEC 61131-3 standard programming

- PLC open function blocks for safety integration in Sysmac Studio

This safety controller uses the same hardware used on EtherCAT networks and EtherNet/IP connectivity for monitoring of status and information. A Sysmac Studio Software full licence supports EtherCAT integration and EtherNET/IP stand-alone configuration of the NX-S modular safety I/O. Sysmac Studio’s safety licence supports only EtherNET/IP stand-alone configuration of the NX-S modular safety I/O.

Safety kits

OMRON also offers two safety kit options to bolster safety on your automation projects.

Our stand-alone safety kits offer a set of different options for centralised or decentralised system configurations, supporting different integration requirements as EtherNet/IP, Safety over EtherCAT (FSoE) or CIP Safety over EtherNet/IP. All NX safety controllers meet requirements for PLe according to EN 13849-1 and SIL3 according to IEC 61508.

These kits help minimise system downtime and maintenance work with dedicated troubleshooting tools like safety data logging, safety unit restore and automatic configuration restart - and it doesn’t require a dedicated interface to execute. The stand-alone kits help support any size of system, assuring that the safety controller and standard PLC will be able to share status information via EtherNet/IP. If remote safety I/O or adding 3rd party devices is part of your requirements, then you can also take advantage of CIP Safety over EtherNet/IP.
