What is a counter?

A counter is a device which stores (and sometimes displays) the number of times a particular event or process has occurred, often in relation to a clock signal. Counters are used in digital electronics as they can count specific events happening in the circuit.

Types of counters

Preset counter: counts until the present value reaches a preset value, and then activates a control output to operate an output device.

Total counter: does not output a control signal - it only displays the present value. A total counter is often used when you only have to display a production count.

Time counter: counts time and displays the length of time that has been counted. Unlike a timer, which sends an output when the time has elapsed, a time counter simply displays the total time.

Why choose OMRON counters

OMRON has a wide variety of world-class counters, tachometers, totalizers, timers and counters, including:

General purpose preset counters: turn ON/OFF control outputs when the present value reaches the preset value. Easy-to-read LCD/LED displays. Tachometer functions are also available. Standouts from OMRON’s range include the H7CC series digital counter/tachometer and
H7BX multifunction counter.

Total/time counters: total counters display the number of count inputs, and time counters display the measured operating time. Try the H7HP series total/time counter or the H7ET series time totalizer, both of which have large, easy-to-read displays. Compact tachometers are also available.

Multi-counters: can mix and match timing and counting functions for maximum control and efficiency. OMRON’s H8BM-R multi-maintenance counter/timer provides up to 9 accumulative counters or timers for machine tool maintenance.
